Overview Component 1 and Starting Component 2

Hello Everyone!

So, my comment didn't show up so I decided to write a post here. I just wanted to make sure we are on the same page on everything.
Component #1
  • We chose our topic : Somali Refugees in the host country of Kenya because of the personal insight of a group member. The personal insight gives a different view of the
project, which differ from a solely theoretical approach. Also, the Somali Refugee problem has existed for a long period of time and is often referred to as a humanitarian disaster, my delving into the problem, it will be easier to understand the drawbacks and problems the agencies and people are facing.
  • Objectives: I think we all want to learn more about what causes the problem and why it has perpetuated for so long. What can be done to help these people living as refugees in Kenya? What are the state of refugees in Kenya? What is Kenya doing to help Somali refugees and what problems do the refugees face while living in Kenya? What opportunities exist for refugees to live meaningful lives?
  • Kenya being a developing country itself host a lot of Somali refugees. It is interesting to see how Kenya deals with refugees because it is a country known for governmental corruption. How are its methods of dealing with refugees in correspondence with the objectives laid down by the international agreement on refugees?
  • In terms of accomplishment, I think the general consensus is that we want to learn what we can do to help as well as get an overall understanding of the issues that Somali refugees have to deal with.
  • Group Contract: Everyone is expected to contribute their ideas and research as well as completely the work on their designated component. It is important that each member communicate if they have problems with a certain aspect of the project. If a member does not hold up their share of work than they will not be able to present with the group when all the work is completed.
So, this is a general overview of what our first component should include. Are there any other things that should be addressed?

Component # 2

  • Garrett posted a link and there is another link on that website to a long report on the refugee problem in Kenya. http://www.hrw.org/en/reports/2009/03/29/horror-hopelessness-0
  • So the main issue that caused the first wave of displacement to Kenya was the Somali Civil War in 1991. That is when the initial government collapse happened, but there were a lot of problems after that. Currently Somali has no federal government, which makes providing aid very difficult. I think for SPITCEROW we should focus on the sources, but changes and enlargement are also key factors as the issue. Please post any research you have found so far and we can discuss.

  1. For whoever is putting together component #2, here would be a great "I" out of the SPICTEROW model.

It's a research article from proquest about the demonizing of Somali's by Kenyan police force to "protect national security." There are many terrorist threats coming in to Kenya from neighboring countries including Somalia and Kenyan police have been abusing Somali refugees for these reasons. Extremely sad, the most of these Somali refugees are women and children who are fleeing the war torn country after their husbands and fathers had been killed in the conflict. Now they have to deal with things like rape, and physical abuse from a lot of the kenyans.

Hey Jaclyn....I re-sent an invitation to your gmu address to be a contributor to the blog....you just have to open that email and confirm it. this way, you can start a new blog post instead of just commenting. I sent this invite to everyone I think like a week ago. If anyone else needs it again, let me know and I'll resend it.
